How to Install Nvidia Drivers on Fedora Like a Pro

If you’re a Linux user, you probably know that many popular distributions do not come with the proprietary Nvidia graphics drivers pre-installed. This can cause issues with display, such as screen tearing and stuttering. But fear not, as there is a way to easily install the official Nvidia drivers on Fedora.

Step 1: Keep Your System Up-to-Date

Before you proceed with the installation, make sure that your system is up-to-date. This can be easily done by using the Software Center or running the command sudo dnf update in the terminal.

Step 2: Enable Third-Party Repositories

If you have not enabled third-party repositories during the initial installation of Fedora, you can do so by heading to the Software Center and managing “Software Repositories” from the menu. This will allow you to enable the RPM Fusion repository, which contains the necessary Nvidia drivers. You can also manually add the RPMFusion repos to your Fedora system if needed.

Step 3: Determine Your Graphics Card

In order to install the correct driver, you need to know what graphics card you have in your system. This can be done by running the command lspci -vnn | grep VGA in the terminal. This will provide you with a list of Nvidia chips that are supported by the drivers.

Step 4: Install the Nvidia Driver

Once you have determined your graphics card, you can proceed to install the latest Nvidia driver available in the RPM Fusion repo for your specific version of Fedora. This can be done by running the command sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia. You will also have the option to enable CUDA support for your driver, which allows you to check the stats of your Nvidia card from the terminal using nvidia-smi.

Step 5: Reboot and Login

In order for the changes to take effect, you will need to reboot your system and login again. Once you do so, you should be able to enjoy the benefits of the official Nvidia driver on your Fedora system.

For Legacy Graphics Cards

If you have an older Nvidia graphics card, you may need to install a legacy driver. You can find a list of supported chips on the Nvidia website, and can use a tool to search for your specific device. Keep in mind that there are only three available drivers to install, even though the website may list more. Use the appropriate command to install the required driver for your system.

Bonus Tip: Install Multimedia Packages

When you add the RPMFusion repositories, you also gain access to multimedia packages that are not available in the regular repositories. To install these packages, you can use the following commands:

  • sudo dnf groupupdate multimedia --setop="install_weak_deps=False" --exclude=PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin – for applications that use gstreamer
  • sudo dnf groupupdate sound-and-video – for packages needed by sound and video applications

Hopefully, this guide has been useful in helping you install Nvidia drivers on your Fedora system. What other tutorials would you like to see from It’s FOSS?
